GEOSCOPE Observatory

French Global Network of broad band seismic stations

The GEOSCOPE Observatory is a Global Network of Broad Band Seismic Stations.

These stations are recording continuously the ground motion. Data of most of the stations are arriving in real-time to the IPGP Data Center and are archived after validation.
The GEOSCOPE Observatory provides data and informations for earthquakes with magnitudes larger than 5.5-6. Similar information may be provided for smaller earthquakes, for example those located in France or in the European-Mediterranean region.

Continuous Data : Description

All GEOSCOPE stations record continuously the ground motion and most of them record also the temperature inside station and the atmospheric pressure.
Waveform data recorded continuously in the stations are transmitted to IPGP Data Center in (near) real time. Today, all GEOSCOPE stations record the digital signals in miniSEED format.
 
The metadata associated to the seismograms, as station information and channel response, are produced and validated by GEOSCOPE Network.

 

Continuous data in real time

Raw data (not quality controlled) sent in (near) real time from stations to IPGP Data Center are inmediately available via the seedlink protocol (from SeisComP) developed by GEOFON/GFZ.
 
This robust protocol allows clients to ask data automatically in real time from GEOSCOPE Data Center in Paris, via the open seedlink server:

Hostname: rtserver.ipgp.fr
port: 18000

In order to minimize the number of connections to the server, it is strongly recommended to configure seedlink in multi-station mode when getting data.

Data stream is sent by seedlink in 512-byte miniSEED (data only) packets.
 
Seismological data from GEOSCOPE Network contribute to earthquake location and to Tsunami Warning systems worldwide.

 

Validated and archived data

GEOSCOPE data is validated by the Observatory (Paris and Strasbourg teams) and sent to the IPGP Data Center.
Validation process includes:
  • Detection of gaps/overlaps and filling up of gaps (often automatically) from data in station
  • Re-encoding data in steim2 compression(if needed) and 4096-byte blocks
  • Set up of comments (station, channel levels) in case of station or acquisition system failure.

At the same time, metadata is produced and validated for new stations or station upgrades in order to be archived.

The graphs of data continuity give an overview of the validated and archived data status.

After quality control process, data (metadata and miniSEED files) is archived in the IPGP Data Center: the metadata is archived in a relational data base system and waveforms stored in a highly available storage system.

Validated data is immediately open to scientific community by throug several interfaces.
